03/15/2011- Hey gang...Me, James, Joe, and Steve did the Covered Bridge Classic on Saturday. Joe did the 17 mile loop and did awesome for his first event. Not sure how Steves ride went, he did the 60 mile loop. Me and James did the century loop as it was James 1st attempt at the 100 mile mark. We took off out of Henderson Park on our way to Don Pedro Dam. The weather was sunny/partly cloudy but still a little on the cool side. We came to the first rest stop and let me say, this ride lack nothing in friendly support and volunteers. At the 1st stop was PPJ's, boiled eggs(with salt shaker), soup, coffee, shot blocks, sport beans, cytomax, water cookies, brownines, chips..plenty to get you refueled for the ride back into Snelling. In fact all the stops were excellent. At the Roberts Ferry stop they had 3 different types of homemade soup, and GRILLED ham, turkey, or cheese sandwiches made to order....awesome! The first loop (40 miles) was a real challenging and fun loop through Merced Falls and to the dam and back into Snelling. The final 60 miles were mostly flat and windy. Me and James took a little short-cut on Hawkins Rd. (what a great name for a road), which had some real nice rollers, then onto Bledsoe to Turlock Rd. After the last stop with about 3 miles to go, we came upon to women on the side of the road. One had taken a spill and her face was pretty scraped up. Their husbands were gone to get the car to pick them up. It seems she was following her husband when a bee stung him and he swerved and stopped and she could'nt stop in time and WAM! Like she said, the ride was almost over and they were having such a good ride! What a bummer. We continued on to the finish and had a nice bbq waiting for us. Our total mileage with the cut-off was 88 miles which was a record for James but he still needs to hit that 100 mark!! Thanks to Healing Nations and all the volunteers who staffed the ride as they hit the 100 mark in participation this year! Great Job!!! Hope to see some of you on Wednesday for our training ride out of Black Bart Playhouse parking lot in Murphys at 5:00 p.m. Ride On!!!!....Donnie.
03/05/2011- Hey gang... We had a great turn-out for Saturdays ride from
Copper Town Square. As I drove into the square, James and Dave were there getting ready and Ronnie and Don soon drove in. Steve from Modesto drove in as did Coach Shelley. Bruce(Captain Brewster) drove up as did Mike and Eric from
Modesto and John made the trek 50 yards from his and his wife's new store, Fancy Pans, for a total of 11 cyclists. We made introductions and decided on a prelim route and took off down Reeds Turnpike to take Rock Creek out to Felix Road and regroup at the stop sign. Bruce, John and James rode away strong as the rest of us followed. Eric and Steve are new to the sport and you wouldn't know it as they do very well on a route unfamiliar to them. Mike also rides very well and I came to learn that him and Eric pair together with their wives and enjoy the sport together. At the stop sign we re-grouped and some of us decided to do the full Milton loop which is the loop for the Copperoppolis
road race and the others did the half loop and took the
short cut on the dirt portion of Salt Springs back to Felix Rd. If you get a chance to go on this road you will notice an old time white schoolhouse and this is the schoolhouse where the TV show
Little House on the Prairie was filmed. While on Hunt Road we saw three bikers coming from the opposite direction and it turned out it was George and Sydney with Mona riding along. It was great to see them and hopefully we can get together with them in the future. It is so great to see Sydney back on the bike after her accident last year. What a strong spirit and will to overcome what she went through and to get back on the bike. Awesome
Sydney!!!!!
Me, Bruce, John, and Ronnie did the full Milton loop as John and Bruce motored away and tag-teamed all the way to Milton. Us 3 re-grouped and waited for Ronnie then motored off and Bruce and John took off up Rock Creek as I watched them disappear! Bruce is a very strong rider and he gave John a good carrot to chase after. We hooked up again as I was spent on the ride in and John took the point and led me and Bruce on back to Highway 4 as I tucked in in my lazy boy position behind them cruising at over 30 mph with the wind at our back. Nice job guys!!!
When we got there, we got some bad news that Eric hit a gravel patch and hit the pavement very hard. Thank goodness for bike helmets as his looked like it had been through hell and back. Eric was banged and scraped up pretty good. I can only tell you Eric that we all have bled and shed skin while participating in this sport at one time or another. It sucks! We all wish you well, along with a speedy recovery, and hope to see you and Mike (and hopefully your wives also) soon. You are both very strong riders and a pleasure to ride with and I hope you come and ride with us again.
Dave and Don rode in together and had a small tailgate between them as Dave had to get home to "Wine Time" with his wonderful wife. The rest of us had a good tailgate and look forward to riding again in the future. I'll be riding
next Saturday at the Covered Bridge Classic
www.HealingNationsModesto.org. And we will be riding
on Wednesday Evenings starting on the 16th leaving from Black Bart parking lot in Murphys at 5:00 pm. Hope to see you all soon.....Donnie.

02/26/2011-Hey gang! Just a quick report on The Pedaling Paths for Independence Metric Century! After all the miserable weather this past week, wow, what a surprise waking up to a bright sunny day with not a cloud in the sky! Although it was very cold, (I'd rather have sun and cold, than rain and cold!) I am so happy for the organizers of this event that there was a break in the bad weather.
1st let me say I can not thank the volunteers enough that put in a ton of hard work and give up their time to put on these events for us to ride our bikes and support a good cause. They are awesome every single one of them!!
Second we are truly blessed that we GET TO ride a bicycle. This event helps support folks who are blind and vision impaired. As I pulled into registration, there were many tandems lining up ready to load one of these individuals on the back and take em for a ride!!! As one young gentleman was getting ready to mount on the back of one tandem, someone asked him, "Are you ready?" And he beamed back, "I am SO ready, I've been waiting for this for a while!!!"...........................................How about that. He certainly didn't care how cold it was.
The ride was awesome! All the volunteers were friendly and supportive and the stops were furnished adequately. I met some wonderful people throughout the ride. One guy at the halfway stop told me it was his first ride and as we talked it was clear that he meant to do the 25 mile version but got stuck on the Metric. I told him eat and drink up and got him a map from one of the volunteers and told him good luck. He'll have a story to tell I'm sure. At that same stop I met a woman on, of all things, a BRIDGESTONE! (How about that Sue!) I ran up on another rider, Brian, and he was riding a "fixie" and doing quite well. We even hooked up again toward the end of the ride and tag teamed together on the way in. The post ride meal was awesome. Ravioli, Pesto Garlic Pasta, ciabatta bread, salad, brownies and cookies and the photographer, Miles John Photography had his computers and monitors set up and was selling pics printed right there for 6 bucks and he would also e-mail you the jpeg! What a deal!
To sum it up. it was an excellent ride for my first long ride of the year and I am seriously thinking of going back next year with my tandem and giving some wonderful people a ride on the back! Ride On!.......Donnie.
02/20/2011-What a great riding weekend as we snuck in some rides in-between the bad and cold weather. Check out the ride reports page for this weekend's ride reports. And check out these pics. I will load all pics taken tomorrow into a folder with a link so you can view them all...Ride on...Donnie.
What an awesome weekend we had!!! But Rain is here so try to sneak out a ride when you can!!!...Ride on....Donnie!
Knights Ferry Ride Saturday 02/19/11- As I drove into Murphys for work
on Sat. morning, it was snowing in just past Copperoppolis all the way into Murphys, so I was certain we wouldn't be riding in the afternoon. But around 10:00 the sun came out and by the time I left work to go to Knights Ferry it was turning into a pretty decent day.
My dad and Ronnie drove into the parking lot and it was just us as I am sure the sight of the bad weather in the morning made people stay away. As it turned out, we didn't get rained on at all and though it was a bit cold we had an excellent ride out to Hwy 132 and back for a total of 40 miles for me and Ronnie and 32 for Don and a real nice tailwind heading back to Knights Ferry. We felt so good we made 2 laps across the famous covered bridge. I'm not sure why, but I just LOVE riding across that bridge..:-). As we came around for our second pass on the bridge, we saw 4 teenagers gathered at the end, 2 boys and 2 girls, with the boys soaking wet and drying off. I said, "You didn't go swimming in that water did you?" and the boys pipe up, "We jumped in from the bridge!". And I replied "That's nuts!!!!" and I was quickly reprimanded by one of the girls who informed me, "No that's being a REAL MAN!!". Ohhhhh...okay then. I stand corrected. And yes, in that case, your young buck is more of a man than I...What a great ending to a great ride!!!!!
Copper Ride 02/20/11-Woke up to a beautiful sunshine day this a.m. but as I went out to get the paper, OH My burrrr it's cold!!!! I was hoping it would warm up by 11:15 though, so off the Hawkins clan went to Copperoppolis. The lovely Lisa from 'Spoken Through the Lens' came along to take some action photos! James, Dave P., John, and newcomers Bill and Karyn were in the lot(for a total of 8) ready for a brisk ride as the day didn't seem to get any warmer. The gang took off on Rock Creek as I hung with dad into a pretty strong headwind out to the reservoir. The water at the reservoir was massively flowing over the spillway. An awesome sight to be seen and down the hill a bit the falls were in full swing. Ronnie, John, Bill and Karyn went all the way to the bottom and I met them on their way back up. I asked Bill how he got talked into going down that 'hell of the west downhill' and he joked that he and Karyn were simply masochists on the bike. As we all are I suppose..:-). Well it was a treat having them along for the ride and they are very good riders who plan on doing many rides this year including Solvang, and in July, the Deathride, and we look forward to them joining us in the future.
We regrouped on Hunt road and headed back to the town square with a nice tailwind at our back. Another Dave story...he is a dog magnet!!! When James, Dave and I do our lunchtime rides, if there is a dog nearby, they will go after Dave. They pay no mind to me and James, but Dave.....he was once attacked by a pack of Cocker Spaniels as we rode by and one bit him right off of his bike. The thing is, me and James rode right by them with not even a "wruff" or glaring stare! Anyway our lab, Peaches, came along today and while Lisa was snapping shots of us riding by, guess who she(Peaches) went after??? Not James who went by her first, but.......Good ole Dave, the Dog Magnet!!!(She wasnt't attacking though, in this case, she was just excited and wanted a ride)
On the way back John and James took advantage of the nice tailwind and rocketed back to the highway very strong...good job guys! And although the day never really warmed up, we had a great ride, a great tailgate, and some great photos that I will upload in a folder so you can check them all out and download at your liesure.... Ride on...Donnie.
Sat. 2/12/11 -
Hey gang! What awesome weather we had this weekend! James informed me the morning ride was awesome as him Shelley, and Steve rode 50 miles out of Eugene(Check out Steve's great description and map on the Sierra Foothills Group Page).
We started the afternoon ride from the upper parking lot in Knights Ferry. As I pulled in Dave, Ronnie and my Dad were ready to go and as I was getting ready John rode into the lot riding his bike from home in Copper down 108 to meet us.
Off we went up the hill past the 50's Diner and across 108 to Wilmes Rd. We all rode together for a bit till the first hill and I instructed my dad to go to the dead end and turn right, then the road veeres left acroos the railroad tracks and stay on the road and we will catch him on the way back. No problem!
We rode to the one lane bridge on Crabtree then turned around and as we headed back to Wilmes, we didnt see Dad. Wow he must be riding quick on that new bike of his so me and John took off after him. I was riding as fast as I could and John was right on my tail and over each rise I figured I'd see dad, but nope. So we went faster hoping we would catch him before the highway. So we get to the highway and no dad. Wow he must've been flying! Not too long after, Dave comes riding up all flushed and breathing hard like he just fininshed a solo break-away in the Tour deFrance! Since my brother has been riding with us, he and Dave have been pretty even, with Dave being a tick better. Well for some reason he thought I was Ronnie(can't imagine how, we look nothing alike) so he couldnt figure out how Ronnie got so fast in just a week and he was riding his rear end off trying to stay at least within sight of him....lmao...and in turn, he rode away from the REAL RONNIE and left him in the dust!!!! Man, funny how motivated we can become with a little dangling of a carrot!
Well we got back to the car and no dad, so I figured he must've turned at Warnerville road so I went out in the truck to find him. No luck. Well he must've been riding around the cemetary hill loop then. I needed gas so I had to go into Oakdale and get some. Then my brother calls me and says he's at the one lane bridge that we originally turned around at (WHAT?). Well the timimng was just so that he turned right on Warnerville as we passed it on the return trip and then he turned left on Crabtree as I drove right onto Warnerville in my truck (confused yet?). Any way I picked him up on Wilmes just before the big hill coming back....oh man. He did over 30 miles!!!!! Sound familiar Sue???? The thing is, he rode much faster with less effort on his new bike than he or I expected and he doesnt have a computer yet. Cause if he did, after about 10 miles he wouldve known to turn around....Oh My!!!
Anyway, us 5 had a great ride as John had to ride back up 108 to O'byrnes Ferry and onto home, probably putting him at about 70 miles! Great job John! Ride on everyone and hope to see you soon....Donnie.
Sat. 2/5/11 - James, Shelley, and John rode out of Jamestown through backroads in and around Sonora and rode 27 miles with 3000 feet of vertical climbing. This is one of Shelley's training rides and has minimal traffic with steady climbs to get your climbing legs in shape. I had to miss this ride unfortunately because I worked in the a.m. but I can't wait for the next one!!....Donnie.
Sat. 2/5/11 - Since I had to work, I posted a ride out of Copper Town Square at 1:00 pm. Dave, Sue, Don, Ronnie and myself went out Rock Creek to Salt Springs Resort. This is Sue's normal ride. However, she usually does it in the a.m. and had yet experienced the fierce headwinds working against you on the way out that I warned her about. (I don't know why people don't believe me sometimes, like how I say it's always cool going up the grade road on our evening rides in the summer, even when temps are in the high 90's). Well she finally got to experience what I have been talking about. Those winds turn a somewhat pleasant ride into a grueling test of strength. Ahhhhh, but how blissful is the ride back with those winds at your behind. Truely a nice reward for a job well done, along with the beer that was awaiting us in the truck. "Hey Dave do you want something to drink?"..."Naw I'm good"....."We got beer!"..."Oh, I didnt realize it was beer."......"The Hawkins clan without beer...pffft...che....c'mon man."....."Well yes I'll have one."...."Well okay then."..lol. Any way we had a great ride and tailgate and hope to see more of you in the future....Donnie.
Sun. 2/6/11 - James, Dave, Ronnie, Don and myself showed up at New Hogan with our Mtn Bikes and left from the small parking lot just below Dam Headquarters onto the road base gravel road. This is a great trail for new Mtn bike riders just getting into the sport. It is a little loose but very wide and the undulations not too harsh. We worked our way through to all the areas of the shore campgrounds and at Acorn, picked up the single track that goes to Elkhorn. From there me, James, and Ronnie took some of the more advanced single track, which was awesome!!! We ran into Greg who runs the MountainBike Review website and informed us that on the 18th 19th and 20th, there will a Mtn Bike festival get together at the Acorn campground with a full compliment of fun and Mtn Biking all weekend. Check it out at MTBR website. On our way back we ran into a biker taking a break and she had a Kona...nice...(thats what I have). We said hi and went on and all of a sudden...zoommmmm...she goes whipping past us! Back at the truck I informed her about the Sierra Foothills Group as she informed me she is getting back into riding but doesn't know anyone to ride with. Her name is Tracy so hopefully she will join the group. We had a great ride and we only hit a very small portion of the technical singletrack and look forward to hitting more of it in the future and hopefully more can join us. And of course, we tailgated with a beer and toasted a fun pre-Superbowl ride...Donnie.
